Karl Spain
Life is Sweet

In Edinburgh 2007 Karl Spain discovered he was unwell. Initially he did nothing as he was losing weight. But when he thought it might be a problem he went to the doctor. He only had diabetes though...it’s not like it was serious or anything.

By discovering more and more about diabetes, Karl realised how little he knew about it, and how little most other people knew about it too. Even in Hollywood diabetes information can be wrong.

Yes, even in a film like ‘Conair’. He knew he needed to do this show and raise awareness about the condition when he read that 100,000 people in the UK are diabetic and don't know it. Plus, he'd written loads of funny material about it which he hated to see go unheard.

Homer Simpson is diabetic, so is Halle Berry. Inspector Morse died from complications brought on by neglecting his diabetes. Gary Mabbut played for England as a diabetic and he was type one, so surely Spain can be funny for sixty minutes?

Twelve months on, living with the knowledge of the damage he had done to himself, he has also discovered that being diabetic makes you funnier. Well... he has learnt the hard way to appreciate the good things in life. Come and appreciate him.
